If you've had a hard time on this planet, it can be challenging to find reasons to stick around. Sometimes all you can do is tie yourself to the mast and hope for the best. Committing yourself to something or someone outside yourself is a way to commit yourself to existing for at least a little bit longer. Open-ended commitments are ideal, as they have the potential to last the span of your natural life. Here are some ideas of ways to keep yourself grounded.
Obligate yourself to being a source of love or support for someone you know. It could be your child, a relative, a friend or an acquaintance. Don't disclose this fact to the person, but promise to your heart that you are obliged to support and care for this person (even if from afar) as long as they live.
If you have a pet, commit yourself to existing at least as long as it does. You are its guardian, its protector. Do not waver in your duty. Care for your animal to the best of your ability for as long as it lives. And when it dies, celebrate its life, grieve its passing, and get another pet.
Perhaps the only thing all humans can agree on is that the world is an imperfect place. There are wrongs that need righting, injustice that needs addressing, inequality that needs adjusting. By dedicating your life to a cause bigger than yourself, you can help make the world a little bit better than you found it. When you make a positive difference for someone else, no matter how small, you have left a legacy to be proud of.
